Hiking in Graham County – Two-thirds of the county is National Forest. The Appalachian Trail winds through the county on its trek from Georgia to Maine. Graham County is the home of The Nantahala National Forest, Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, Slickrock Creek Wilderness area and borders the Smoky Mountains National Park. The Snowbird & West Buffalo Creeks have a national reputation of some of the best trout streams around.
The Tail of the Dragon is known as one of the best motorcycle / sportscar roads in America. It will challenge even the best riders/drivers with its 318 curves in 11 miles. The Cherohala Skyway offers unsurpassed views of Joyce Kilmer and the Cherokee National Forest.
Lake Santeetlah whose shoreline is more than 75% National Forest offers security that it will never be spoiled by development. The county seat is Robbinsville and has a population of about 2,000. The 4th of July Annual Heritage Festival is one of the biggest celebrations. Another enjoyable event is the Graham County Rescue Squad’s annual Ramp Fest, usually held the last week of April.
Stecoah Valley Center offers a variety of cultural events with live Appalachian music every Saturday night through the summer. The Stecoah Valley Artisans Gallery offers a unique opportunity to buy original artwork as well as the fine crafts that have made North Carolina famous. Many artisans in the county have studios and galleries to visit.
Outdoor adventures are aplenty in Graham County. Hiking, whitewater rafting, canoeing, kayaking, fly-fishing, lake fishing, boating, jet skiing, hunting, horseback riding, nature photography, and mountain biking are some of the more strenuous activities. Others prefer the quiet restfulness of the forest, waterfalls, mountains, lakes, and streams.
